My daughter
Greetings.
My name is Kelly, and I am a mother from the State of Michigan.
In this year of 2004 I'm now 39 year's old, and my daughter Suzanne is now
18 year's old. She is a stunning beauty today, and is over 6'0.
When
my daughter was in the 1st grade in 1994 she was targeted for an ADHD
label by her teacher due to what I felt was her inquisitiveness.
Suzanne’s eyes had an electric zeal to them.
She was always curious and would question everything.
It was no shock to me that the school raised complaints regarding
her individuality and questioning nature.
At home Suzanne would not only question me, but also then question
all my answers. I truly
believe that this is a sign of intellectual ability, and recalled doing
the same thing as a kid growing up. Initially
I had understanding for both my daughter and for the teacher raising
complaints. It is my very
strong experience that the more intelligent a child is the more difficult
they can be to deal with, especially for those that have little training
in this area of education. During
this same time period, my husband became seriously ill and later died in
late 1996. This unhappy upheaval was cause for a deep sadness in both our
lives. Suzanne’s
teacher complained that she would not sit still and talked too much, and
that this bothered the other students in class. I was ordered by
both the school principal and school social worker to schedule an
appointment with the school principal's choice of a doctor.
The school principal told me that my daughter needed to be on
Ritalin to continue to attend elementary school. I was provided with
the explanation that ADHD was a brain disease, and that only Ritalin could
correct this brain disease. The
school told me that children that don't take “medication” for ADHD,
when the schools tell them so, end up very disturbed later in life. 's
teacher viewed my daughter's questions as a sign of ignorance.
At this point, I was beginning to view her teacher as weak and
ineffective. When I started questioning the school about ADHD being
a brain disorder, the wonderful relationship I had with the school in the
beginning started falling apart. I
must say that I did not buy the ADHD “brain condition” explanation
that I was provided with by my daughter’s school.
I also did not buy the schools idea that drugging her would help
her. I
offered to come into my daughter's class to observe her and see for myself
what her teacher felt was so terribly wrong with her.
They would not let me observe my own child in her classroom setting
and this set off a red flag for me. Why hide a child that has an
alleged “brain disorder” if this so called "disease" is
real? Many
events transpired, but the end result with the school was tragic.
Doctor reports stating that my child was not disabled in any way, and even
reports from another school stating my daughter was not disabled, were
both not enough evidence for the school to back off their coercive push to
label my daughter mentally ill (ADHD) and push me to drug her.
Later, even many witness accounts of the schools coercive tactics
to wear me down did little to get the school off my back. Though I had
suspected early on that things just didn’t add up, the schools coercive
tactics to get me to label and drug my daughter confirmed my suspicions
and made me come to the realization that this push to label was fraudulent
in nature. Even with my
knowledge at that particular time, I had no idea what laid ahead for us
and that I would soon encounter some of the most bizarre crimes occurring
at this school. These crimes included the school conducting a police
set up on me, and later filing a fraudulent child protective service
complaint against me. At one
point, I even walked in on a teacher shaking her doubled up fist in my
daughter's face. They
wanted ADHD labels and drugs for other children also, but I was the only
one that said, "NO." Because of my noncompliance, I was
targeted for intimidation tactics by the school to wear me down.
The school did not anticipate that I would never be worn down.
I stood my ground to the end. During an incident where the
police were called in, a police officer told me that the school staff
explicitly feared me. They hated me intensely for not
buying into the con and giving in to their demands. They continued
to assert their beliefs on me, to which I questioned every statement. I
wanted scientific proof. They
couldn't provide it. They never provided it. I
started homeschooling my daughter as a result of the continued abuse to
her by her school. The school
was unable to provide an education for my daughter; they only could
provide labels and drugs. Starting
homeschooling turned my life and my child’s life around for the
positive. Suzanne
devoured academics. I made her study in a Christian curriculum, and
side-by-side I advanced her academically. Education has always been a
fascinating field to me. I think learning is exciting and I enjoyed
teaching her. With this
positive, optimistic environment, and what we both considered a “bright
new start” my daughter thrived.
A positive outcome that was a direct result of my story being public knowledge was that the State of Michigan changed the charge of filing a false and malicious child protective service complaint from a misdemeanor to a felony. My
heart and soul goes out to all children to be educated in an environment
consisting of adequately trained teachers without the use of mind-altering
drugs. I believe the key to
protecting children is their parent’s, and that is accomplished only
when parents are informed with facts and truth. Parents need to
question anything that makes them uncomfortable. I found that when my daughter was academically challenged her behavior and attitude fell nicely into place. She was being taught as if she was slow in public school, and the outcome there was horrible. As soon as real and adequate mental stimulation was presented to my daughter, academically and emotionally she flowered and bloomed. Though she was greatly marked up negatively by her experience in public school, she was also greatly blessed beyond average to be later provided with such an unusual educational experience.
