Educational Resources

“AbleChild has long recognized that all children have different learning styles and that each child is a unique individual, not only capable of learning, but of achieving success. We believe that by labeling these children with harmful pseudo-scientific labels (such as ADHD/ADD, OCD, ODD, to name a few) and in turn, labeling them “Mentally Ill”, we have adversely hindered our current educational system”, Patricia Weathers, AbleChild Cofounder.

“Our children should be provided with educational solutions, NOT LABELS AND DRUGS,” Sheila Matthews, AbleChild Cofounder

In addition, they have developed the Sensational Strategies for Teaching Beginning Readers which is an instructional reading program, complete with instructional DVD, developed for parents to use at home with their children. This powerful program is based on the same Orton-Gillingham (phonics, multi-sensory, highly structured) method of reading instruction used by many of the best professional educators–in both public and private schools–as well as many outstanding tutoring centers. IMSE has developed this program to empower parents to give their children a head start on the basics of reading, to support beginning readers, and to assist children who experience difficulty with the reading process. This program is designed for parents of children from pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Sudbury Valley School
Sudbury Valley School is a place where people decide for themselves how to spend their days. Here, students of all ages determine what they will do, as well as when, how, and where they will do it. This freedom is at the heart of the school; it belongs to the students as their right, not to be violated.

The fundamental premises of the school are simple: that all people are curious by nature; that the most efficient, long-lasting, and profound learning takes place when started and pursued by the learner; that all people are creative if they are allowed to develop their unique talents; that age-mixing among students promotes growth in all members of the group; and that freedom is essential to the development of personal responsibility.

In practice this means that students initiate all their own activities and create their own environments. The physical plant, the staff, and the equipment are there for the students to use as the need arises.

The school provides a setting in which students are independent, are trusted, and are treated as responsible people; and a community in which students are exposed to the complexities of life in the framework of a participatory democracy.

It encourages the development of each child’s sense of truth, beauty, and goodness, and provides an antidote to violence, alienation, and cynicism. The aim of the education is to inspire in each student a lifelong love of learning, and to enable them to fully develop their unique capacities.

For the Waldorf student, music, dance, and theater, writing, literature, legends and myths are not simply subjects to be read about, ingested and tested. They are experienced. Alpha-Phonics and Dr. Samuel L. Blumenfeld
Samuel L. Blumenfeld has published ten books on education in America, and he has spent much of his career investigating the following problems: the decline in American literacy, the reasons for the high rate of learning disabilities in American children, the reasons behind the educational establishment in America’s support for sex and drug education, the reasons why so many children are labeled ADD, and why the school system refuses to use intensive phonics in reading instruction and memorization in mathematics instruction.

Blumenfeld was born in New York City, educated there, and graduated from The City College of New York in 1950. The book publishing industry is where he spent his next ten years – as editor of the Universal Library at Grosset & Dunlap.
His bold commentary on education issues and his veneration as a speaker have brought him to lecture in every state in the United States as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and England. He is internationally recognized as a leader in the intensive, systematic phonics movement.

Blumenfeld has written for many online and print sources on a variety of subjects. His writings have appeared in such diverse publications as Reason, Education Digest, Boston Magazine, Vital Speeches of the Day, Practical Homeschooling, Esquire, and many others.

Home School Legal Defense Association
A nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. Through annual memberships, HSLDA is tens of thousands of families united in service together, providing a strong voice when and where needed.

HSLDA advocates on the legal front on behalf of our members in matters which include conflicts with state or local officials over homeschooling. Each year, thousands of member families receive legal consultation by letter and phone, hundreds more are represented through negotiations with local officials, and dozens are represented in court proceedings. HSLDA also takes the offensive, filing actions to protect members against government intrusion and to establish legal precedent. On occasion, HSLDA will handle precedent-setting cases for nonmembers, as well.

Sonlight
Sonlight Curriculum is a Christian company specializing in literature-based homeschool curriculum programs. It provides complete curriculum packages and individual resources and materials so you can build the preschool or K-12 homeschool curriculum that best meets your family’s needs. Sonlight is based in Littleton, Colorado and serves customers in over 150 countries worldwide.

Its mission is to reach families worldwide with remarkable, literature-rich, internationally-focused homeschool curriculum.
Its “secret” really comes down to this: It believes that most children respond more positively to great literature than they do to textbooks. Books — quality books — can distill the wisdom of an entire life into the span of a few pages. They can feed us with spiritual insight beyond imagination. Whether written by Christians or non- Christians, great books help us to develop critical thinking skills. They cause us to question the validity of our own values and beliefs in light of the author’s perspective.

These benefits of great literature have inspired them to build their curriculum on quality books that present content in a highly engaging fashion. Once a good book grabs your child’s attention, you’ll find that the educational process becomes relatively painless — because your child will actually want to read!
